Tour of Amalfi

Founded by Romans, Amalfi is a splendid little city by the sea, with a very interesting and important history. Amalfi was in fact, one of the Marine Republics during 19th century, and it rivalled with Pisa and Genoa in the Mediterranean Sea control. Amalfi lived only a few golden years during the 11th century, then fell under the Norman pressure in 1131, and was also ravaged and sacked by Pisa in 1137. The city suffered a terrible seaquake in 1343 that destroyed many works of art in the city. Among the remaining architectural beauties, the "Duomo" is by far the most renowned. Dedicated to Saint Andrew, patron saint of the city, the cathedral is the result of the superimposition of architectural remains of several smaller and older churches built since the very first establishment of the city in the first century AD. Amalfi is also known for its paper industry and the "Museo della Carta" (Paper Museum).
